My Soul to Lose (Soul Screamers)

My Soul to Lose - Rachel Vincent "My Soul to Lose" is the prequel novella to Rachel Vincent's "Soul Screamers" series. I haven't read the series to date, but I have to say that it's a wonderful, eerie introduction that piqued my curiosity and interest in the series. The story centers around Kaylee Cavenaugh, a young woman afflicted with an odd series of panic attacks. Unfortunately, after a panic incident in the middle of the mall (and seeing shadows closing in over a boy in a wheelchair), Kaylee ends up in a mental institution without understanding why she's there, and what caused her uncontrollable screams. She copes with being in the institution for quite some time, and I could understand her fear and frustration with the scheme of events. What occurs after that is borders on the eerie side, but it does leave some threads hanging, no doubt leading into the larger intrigue of the series, I would gather. Still, it was a short, engaging read that I enjoyed, and I'll certainly look into the series from here to see where it goes. Overall score: 3.5/5
