The Spring Before I Met You (The Lynburn Legacy, #0.25)

The Spring Before I Met You (The Lynburn Legacy, #0.25) - Sarah Rees Brennan "The Spring Before I Met You" is a prequel story that focuses on one of the main characters of Sarah Rees Brennan's "Unspoken." Jared Moore, a.k.a. Jared Lyndburn, is told to be a deeply disturbed young man accused of murdering his father. But as this story's told through the eyes of his counselor Mariel Delgado, she realizes that there's more to Jared than his reputation. It gives a brief introduction into Jared's interactions with Kami, who Mariel believes to be only an imaginary friend.I really enjoyed this short story because it gave me an opportunity to connect more with Jared's character. He's flawed and darkly humored, but there are points of good that are visible within him. I liked the attention brought to his interests (reading) and the contrast of his darker nature with his willingness to help the people around him. I did appreciate Mariel's brief viewpoint through this story, because the story not only gave light to her aims and experiences, but her observance and her aim to try to help Jared was developed well even in the brevity of the narrative. It's a great lead in for "Unspoken" and certainly worth the read for anyone wanting a strong introduction to the series and to one of its primary characters.Overall score: 4/5
